Visual Research:

The installation Extreme Measures of Chris Burden served as a source of inspiration for how I utilized the audience as part of the staging. For this design, I focused on how societal power structures affect humanity. Important to this play is the central power struggle, so height, distance and verticality became central elements of the play-scape. The scaffolding served to establish a particular diagonal gaze between the performer and the audience, but also allowed the audience to fully view the body of the performer as a compositional element of the stage picture.

Material and Texture Research:

From the beginning, this play made me think of the contrast between harsh materials and flesh. I, therefore, looked for materials, such as weathered chain link and steel.

Set Ideas:

I explored multiple set possibilities that included ideas of height, audience-gaze angles and materials. I particularly looked at audience configuration from a frontal view, passing from a thrust auditorium to finally arriving at a double-tiered arena.
