About:

Social responsibility towards the communities I work with, and considerations of ethical, intercultural, and environmental issues, inform both the process and outcome of my design. Whenever possible, I utilize sustainable construction methods and materials in my practice. For Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical In the Heights, my commitment was to work with materials that could be reused by the local community after closing night. For example, taking a sculptural perspective, I recreated New York City’s skyline with hundreds of white plastic milk crates. Depending on the effects produced by the lighting design, these milk crates provided an open-mesh texture that allowed spectators to either see the actors behind them or could appear as solid surfaces for projections. The milk crates did not become “scenic waste,” but rather, were later donated to local organizations.
